Far enough from the “deadline of 30” and close enough to the youth of the 20’s, from 23, the future looks bright. However much older it sounds than twenty-two, twenty-three, they say, is the best in-between age.

So, when I turned 23 earlier this year, I could feel it. Something was going to happen. Something had to happen. My life, at that point, was somewhat up in the air. I was working at my dream company on a contract that would soon expire, but at the same time, I was enjoying my work-life balance and meeting new, wonderful people. I was having a good time, but still, it didn’t feel like it was enough.

A part of me felt like I could do more, see more, and be more, but the other part was safe and secure. It’s easy to stay on the safe side, but the safe side was not where I wanted to be. The safe side is where dreams go to die. So, when my contract was finished, I declined every offer and I decided to follow a one-year plan. Corporate be damned, I was determined and inspired to do two things:

1.  See what you can see.
2. Do what you can do.

Simple enough for some, yet difficult for people like me who don’t trust themselves to make things happen. I couldn’t wait any longer for someone to make an opportunity for me. I couldn’t stand by until something fell into my lap.

So, for the last 4 months, I have been doing what I can. My dreams are fitting in quite nicely, and I feel closer to them than I’ve ever been. I’ve contributed to a start-up company, fallen in love with Los Angeles, recorded a song with the help of an amazing artist and friend, watched the moon set into the Mediterranean, and lived, truly lived, for the first time in my young life.

Hobbes was wrong. Life isn’t nasty or brutish. Life is full of marvelous things, it’s up to you to notice them.
